AS-Level

Computer Science will be sitting AS-Level exams at the end of Year 12.

The areas covered by the specification are as follows;

  1. Fundamentals of programming
  2. Fundamentals of data structures
  3. Systematic approach to problem solving
  4. Theory of computation
  5. Fundamentals of data representation
  6. Fundamentals of computer systems
  7. Fundamentals of computer organisation and architecture
  8. Consequences of uses of computing
  9. Fundamentals of communication and networking

The assessment and teaching structure of Year 12 is as follows;

1 hour 30 minutes on-screen exam based on specification areas 1-4.

Paper 2

2 per week

1 hour 30 minutes written exam based on specification areas 5-9.

A-LEVEL (Year 13)

Computer Science will be sitting AS-Level exams at the end of Year 13. AS grades do not contribute towards the full A-Level, however AS-Level content will be assessed in the A-Level exam papers.

The areas covered by the specification are as follows;

  3. Fundamentals of algorithms
  4. Theory of computation
  5. Fundamentals of data representation
  6. Fundamentals of computer systems
  7. Fundamentals of computer organisation and architecture

  10. Fundamentals of databases
  11. Big Data
  12. Fundamentals of functional programming
  13. Systematic approach to problem solving
  14. Non-exam assessment – the computing practical project
